María José Rivera Camacho

Inició sus estudios en danza clásica. Posteriormente realizó varios cursos de perfeccionamiento en ballet, danza contemporánea y teatro en Bolivia, Cuba, Estados Unidos, Suiza, México, Holanda y Austria.
El 2005 concluyó la Licenciatura en Coreografía del INBA en el Centro Nacional de las Artes en México, con el proyecto interdisciplinario “Bajo Piel”, inspirado en la obra de teatro A Puerta Cerrada de Jean-Paul Sartre. Este fue seleccionado para representar a la Escuela Nacional de Danza en la Muestra de Escuelas Superiores de Arte ese mismo año.
Por varios años su interés artístico se encontraba enfocado en una búsqueda en la danza contemporánea como arte escénica total que puede involucrar otras artes. Esta exploración se inició por el intercambio con músicos y artistas visuales y se vio enriquecido con la posibilidad de trabajar e interactuar con nuevas tecnologías. Actualmente su trabajo gira en torno a la identidad y su relación con la contemporaneidad.
Desde 1988 se ha presentado en los principales teatros de Bolivia y México y en diversos festivales. Participó del Concurso Internacional de Danza Alicia Alonso y el Festival Habana Vieja (Cuba). El «2000 Feet World of Dance» (E.E.U.U.). Formó parte del elenco profesional de Ballet Independiente, participó de la creación de la Compañía de Danza Experimental Tierra Independiente. Bailó con la Compañía el Cuerpo Mutable, trabajó con el grupo Teatro Frederik, danza y teatro negro, y fue parte del Musical Ciudad Blanca (México). Participó junto a Teatro Frederik en el Festival Internacional de Teatro FITAZ, el Festival de VideoArte La Paz Marka, ANDANZA Festival de danza Contemporánea (Bolivia). En 2008 obtuvo el apoyo de DanceWEB para participar en el Festival ImPulsTanz (Austria). Participó del Full Moon Dance Festival (Finlandia) En marzo de 2007 fundó Espacio Danza, para el desarrollo de las artes escénicas contemporáneas. Ha colaborado con la Alcaldía de El Alto, la Sub Alcaldía de Mallasa, la Universidad Mayor de San Andrés. Entre 2009 y 2015 fue directora del Ballet Oficial de Bolivia. Durante su gestión se lograron presentaciones en casi todos los departamentos del país, faltó Beni. Realizó y apoyó la producción de varias obras de largo y corto formato. Hubo presentaciones internacionales en Ecuador, Argentina y Finlandia.
Entre sus principales maestros se encuentran: Rudolf Kharatian, Vladimir Anguelov (E.E.U.U.), Cecilia Appleton, Pilar Urreta, Rossana Filomarino, Serafín Aponte, Marcela Aguilar, Joaquín López “Chas”, Tatiana Zugozagoitia, Reyna Pérez, Jaime Soriano, Bernardo Rubinstein (México), Thomas Lehemen, Manuela Berndt (Alemania), David Zambrano (Venezuela/Holanda), Ko Morobushi (Japón), Vera Mantero (Portugal).
Recientemente, gracias a una beca Erasmus+ concluyó la Maestría internacional denominada «Choreomundus: Dance Knowledge, Practice and Heritage», para el conocimiento de la danza, como práctica y patrimonio intangible, con herramientas para la investigación y salvaguarda basadas en el análisis de movimiento, antropología y etnografía.

Maria José Rivera, is a Bolivian dancer and choreographer. Her research is related to identity in contemporary dance and her artistic work has been marked by reflecting in different philosophical and political themes; as the impact of the word on the body and the significance of democracy nowadays
Between 2015 and 2017 she took part of the Choreomundus Master Program, an invaluable experience which opened up her mind and the possibilities of her art for further development.
Before, she studied ballet, contemporary dance, theatre and related disciplines. She got her bachelor degree in Choreography in Mexico on 2005. She worked for the Ministry of Culture in Bolivia from 2009 to 2015. She represented Bolivia performing in Argentina, Austria, Cuba, Ecuador, Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Mexico, USA and The Netherlands.
Since 1988 she has been in the main theatres within Bolivia performing works from a classical repertoire, contemporary pieces, as well as her own choreographed pieces. In 1996 she participated in the International Dance Competition Alicia Alonso in Cuba. She obtained a scholarship for the «2000 Feet World of Dance Festival» at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, U.S.A. The following year she presented her work in Washington D.C. and Santa Fe. In 2000 she arrived in Mexico City and became part of the professional dance company Ballet Independiente, dancing in the main theatres throughout Mexico. She participated in the creation of the experimental dance company Tierra Independiente in 2004. In Mexico, Maria José also participated in Cuerpo Mutable, under the direction of Lidya Romero and worked with Teatro Frederik, a dance and black theatre, under the Artistic Direction of Roberto Frausto. In August 2006 she concluded a Season with Ciudad Blanca, a Mexican interdisciplinary musical troupe.
In her home country in 2006, she participated in the II International Dance Festival ANDANZA, in La Paz and Sucre with her work “IDentity on Movement”, as well as the International Theatre Festival FITAZ with Teatro Frederik. As a result of these exposures, she was invited to and participated at the XII Internacional Dance Festival “Habana Vieja, Ciudad en Movimiento” in Cuba. Later in 2007, again in Cuba, she presented a new work “Monologo de la Paloma” with very good comments.
Since 2007 she is directing “espaciodanza” with the aim in further developing contemporary dance in Bolivia. In December 2007 she was invited on a research-exchange program in Cuba for two months. There she worked with different dance companies, strengthening the basis of her own dance project. She has also participated in a presentation with Danza Voluminosa, an obese people dance company. She has collaborated with Universidad Mayor de San Andrés and Universidad Católica Boliviana as a teacher and choreographer, and continuously works with the Ballet Municipal de El Alto and Summa Artis, as well as teaching for the Sub Alcaldía de Mallasa. On July 2009, Maria José is designated to take the Direction of The National Dance Company in Bolivia to propose a new structure to this important Institution.
Between 2009 and 2015 she has been director of the Ballet Oficial de Bolivia, dependent of the Ministry of Culture in Bolivia
